Adult Health IV Hyde/Law-Ham Reflections on the Older Adult

My baseline views of gerontology and working with this population were based from shared stories and my experience with my grandparents. These focused on cognitive impairment, social isolation, physical decline, and wisdom. While I always value the wisdom and respect of older adults, I subconsciously viewed aging through a more negative lens. I always found myself focusing on the chronic conditions rather than how to promote well-being. My direct experience with older individuals consisted of my family members, which helped me to appreciate the resilience and wisdom gained with time. Growing up I would hear stories and lessons my grandparents learned and value this relationship with them.

This course has expanded and refined my understanding of aging. Going through the semester we learned about different aspects with common changes in aging, the importance of med reconciliation with polypharmacy, end of life, elder abuse, and sexuality with this population have all reshaped my perceptions. Aging is an individual process and must be recognized when caring for an older individual. There are so many misconceptions about aging this class has taught me about. For example, understanding the impact of polypharmacy made me realize that there is so much importance in advocating for thorough medication reconciliations to promote patient outcomes and prevent adverse effects. I valued the discussion around sexuality for older individuals as it opened my eyes to often overlooking aspects of this population’s lives that are essential for quality of life. As I start my nursing career, even if I work in a pediatric field this knowledge can still be utilized with how I interact with patient’s caregivers, grandparents or even older colleagues.

One major takeaway from this course that has influence how I think about my own future is the value of social engagement and the aspect of purposeful living. Learning about the importance of strong social networks and continuing involvement in the community or meaningful activities has made me reflect on my own relationships and how I manage stress today. I have come to realize that building a life should include my own hobbies, close friendships and relationships, community engagement and everything I’m doing right now in my life plays a role into my future. Staying healthy and valuing my life right now in this moment is just as imporant as well. This insight has motivated me to be more intentional about maintaining balance, prioritizing emotional well-being and staying active which are all crucial to healthy aging.
